PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS WEEK
Since Prostate Cancer Awareness Week was initiated in 1989, the amount of research dollars earmarked for prostate cancer has tripled. In addition, nearly 60 percent of new cases are localized and potentially curable, indicating a dramatic increase in awareness among the general population about the importance of early detection. Aside from screening thousands of men, Prostate Cancer Awareness Week has also yielded valuable information on several important research issues.

GENETIC RESEARCH ON PROSTATE CANCER
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is conducting a study of the genetics of prostate cancer. Your family may be eligible to join if: two or more men related by blood have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and at least two of these men are living. If your family joins the Prostate Cancer Genetic Research Study, family members will be asked to complete a brief mailed health questionnaire and have a sample of blood drawn by your own doctor.

NEUTRON THERAPY FOR PROSTATE CANCER
Network Chicago has material on neutron treatment for prostate cancer with links to the Fermilab Neutron Therapy Facility. Scientists use neutrons to treat inoperable cancer tumors and cancers that haven't responded to traditional radiation therapy. Physicians and others working on the project say it's a more effective form of treatment than traditional radiation; the cost is about $25,000. The Network Chicago website also lists other websites and organizations dedicated to fighting prostate cancer. While the organization is sponsored by the local media and community groups, their links offer a national perspective on key research facilities, support groups, and advocacy groups.

OVARIAN CANCER MONTH
September is also Ovarian Cancer Month, a time for cancerpage to feature the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. NOCC is an education and advocacy organization with many state chapters. NOCC operates a toll-free line 1-888-OVARIAN, while their website has one of the most active message boards related to cancer.
Their web site had 6,700,000 hits last year, while they were answering 20,000 calls, and serving 16,000 members. See www.ovarian.org.
