JUNE IS MEN'S HEALTH MONTH
This year, an estimated 643,000 American men or boys will be diagnosed with some type of cancer. More than half of those will beat the disease.

DADS: SAUCE IS GOOD FOR THE GRANDEUR
High lycopene in tomatoes may protect men against prostate cancer according to a new study. Men with the highest serum
lycopene levels were 35% less likely to develop prostate cancer than those with the lowest levels. For aggressive disease,
the difference was even more dramatic with a risk reduction of 63%, according to Dr. Tara M. Vogt, from the National Cancer
Institute in describing a new report.
TOMATO SAUCE MAY EVEN HELP MEN ALREADY DIAGNOSED
In an earlier study, serum PSA levels also dropped 17.5% for men who were to undergo radical prostatectomy, after a 3 week diet of pasta with tomato sauce that included about 26 mg of lycopene per day.
...AND WATERMELON, TOO
Watermelon is fat free and is a source of vitamins A, B6, C, and thiamin. Studies have shown that a cup and a half of
watermelon contains about 9 to 13 milligrams of lycopene. On average, watermelon has about 40 percent more lycopene
than raw tomatoes.

AIR POLLUTION INCREASES LUNG CANCER RISK FOR ALL
A recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association describes increased lung cancer, even among lifetime nonsmokers,
in the most polluted cities. The study has followed almost 2 million adults since 1982 representing one of the largest and longest
studies to date on the topic of air pollution and cancer. Researchers documented a clear association --not an absolute cause and
effect -- between measures of air pollution and the prevalence of lung cancer as well as cardiopulmonary disease and other lung
diseases. See non-technical explanation of the study

"THE GIFTS I RECEIVED FROM BREAST CANCER LESSONS"
See the inspiring story posted on cancerpage.com by a breast cancer survivor. She wrote: "I was an unwilling pledge to the
sorority of breast cancer patients. My sorority sisters and I are not bound by strands of pearls or candle ceremonies but
by the bare-knuckled fight with a wily and devious disease. But through this fight I have received gifts of which I never
dreamed. Road Warrior Designation: I've been down the cancer road which was uncharted territory for me in 1998. ...
I discovered that speaking with someone who was a cancer veteran was an invaluable source of comfort. Now I am able
to offer my experiences to newly-diagnosed women who are beginning to travel the long road from diagnosis to recovery."
