Indoor Tanning Association
Strikes Back
 |
The Indoor Tanning industry
believes it's been maligned by a scam backed by skin doctors who are
biased. It demands that dermatologists "come clean about lucrative ties to the
sunscreen industry." Wednesday, the Indoor Tanning Association bought a full
page ad in the NY Times, charging the skin cancer/sun exposure connection is
overblown hokum.
SLATE magazine examines the
scientific evidence cited by the Association's high profile campaign.

American Academy Dermatology
responds.
The
FDA requires
indoor tanning equipment (sunlamps) to warn consumers ...."DANGER--Ultraviolet
radiation. Follow instructions. Avoid overexposure. As with natural sunlight,
overexposure can cause eye and skin injury and allergic reactions. Repeated
exposure may cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer."

Fears of Chemo Often
Worse than Real Thing
Eighty-three percent
of cancer survivors surveyed said they feared getting chemotherapy ... but, 62% found their fears
were unjustified. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship -
has launched an awareness campaign, Surviving
with Confidence, to spread the word on advances being made in managing
chemo side effects. Read more about the campaign
here. To avoid anxiety, patients are encouraged to
ask questions and talk
with their medical team before treatments begin.

Diabetes Foot Cream Investigated for
Possible Cancer
Connection
The FDA alerted doctors this week that it's looking at some
study data that suggests an increased risk of dying from cancer for
people who used the prescription wound healing cream Regranex. The cream has
been on the market since 1997. "At this time, FDA believes
that there may be some evidence for an increased risk of death from cancer in patients
who had repeated treatments with Regranex. Because there are known risks associated
with diabetic foot and leg ulcers that do not heal, the potential risk of using
Regranex should be weighed against the benefit for each individual patient."

National Asbestos Awareness Week
Important in the area of cancer
awareness because exposure
to asbestos is associated with the increased risk of mesothelioma, a cancer of
the lining of the lungs. An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 Americans are
diagnosed with mesothelioma every year, most of them older than 65.
Men are much more likely to develop
the disease the women.
