Cancer Research
Funding
The number of government funded cancer research projects is likely to
double in the next two years because of economic stimulus funding.
"Economic stimulus funds give us the chance to be visionary," the head of the
National Cancer Institute, John Niederhuber, said this week, adding that the
NCI will seek to fund more young, first-time investigators, and will emphasize
prevention and early diagnosis in the research it supports in the future.
"Patients still need better treatments, better prevention, and better early
detection," he said. "We must recommit ourselves to answering that call." Read

In the Lab/In the Clinic
Statin drugs given to lower cholesteral may also be
useful in breast cancer patients who don't respond to tamoxifen. Researchers at
the Lombardi Comhrehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center
have found that breast cancer cells may produce extra cholesteral as a shield to
protect themselves against tamoxifen. The scientists reported their
findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.
