Cancer Research Funding

The number of government funded cancer research projects is likely to double in the next two years because of economic stimulus funding. "Economic stimulus funds give us the chance to be visionary," the head of the National Cancer Institute, John Niederhuber, said this week,  adding that the NCI will seek to fund more young, first-time investigators, and will emphasize prevention and early diagnosis in the research it supports in the future. "Patients still need better treatments, better prevention, and better early detection," he said. "We must recommit ourselves to answering that call." Read more here.

Mesothelioma

Toll continues to rise despite regulations limiting exposure to asbestos. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), deaths from malignant mesothelioma rose between 1999 to 2005 from 2,482 to 2,704. Mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the lungs, is primarily associated with occupational exposure to asbestos. From the CDC MMWR report .


 In the Lab/In the Clinic

Statin drugs given to lower cholesteral may also be useful in breast cancer patients who don't respond to tamoxifen. Researchers at the Lombardi Comhrehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center have found that breast cancer cells may produce extra cholesteral as a shield to protect themselves against tamoxifen. The scientists reported their findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. Read more here .
