Better-For-You-Birthday
Cake
The American Cancer Society now has an
official ACS birthday cake. The better-for-you-birthday cake
is a
contest winner chosen after an ACS
- Culinary Institute of America - "Ace of
Cakes" challenge to invent a healthier version of the traditional birthday cake. The top cake used less sugar, eggs, oil and butter, substituting
ingredients like dried cherries, applesauce, beets, and wholegrain flour. Download "The New Red Velvet Cake" recipe here

Poor Health Habits Among Older
Cancer Survivors
It turns out, the health habits of
cancer survivors aren't that different from those who haven't faced a
cancer diagnosis. A new study finds that most older long-term cancer survivors
who are interested in diet and exercise actually have poor health habits. Researchers
at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in
NY talked to 753 people over the age of 65 who had been diagnosed
and treated for cancer more than 5 years earlier. While cancer survivors
did, on average, report a better attitude and quality of life than is typical of
older individuals, their actual exercise and eating habits were just
as bad as the population as a whole. The study is scheduled to be published in
the September 1, 2009 issue of the journal CANCER, a publication of the
American Cancer Society.

In the Lab/In the
Clinic
Ohio scientists believe they may have linked another
cancer to a virus. Researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer
Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute found the same
mutated version of the virus in a third of the patients with one of
the most common forms of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma. The mutated
virus was also found in 15% of the tumors tested. Next steps involve determining
how common this virus is in healthy people. "If it proves to be a cancer-causing
virus, and if it proves to be common in the general population, it might be
something we should begin screening people for," one of
the researchers
said.
