A Hospital Horror Story Below is a link to an article that appeared in The Journal News (A NY newspaper) on April 19, 2006) The patient was my mother. After my mother was walking on a fracture for two weeks, her Oncologist admitted her for PALLIATIVE RADIATION for pain relief only from the fracture and NOT to treat the cancer. She scheduled her discharge for 3 days after admittance, but then went on vacation the day before the scheduled discharge. The oncologist covering for my mother's oncologist refused to discharge her as planned. The oncologist never told us my mother was so near the end and never even mentioned hospice. My mother was put through unnecessary tests and treatments when she should have been home with hospice. Because my mother was over-insured, the only conclusion for keeping her in the hospital was financial gain. She certainly didn't benefit from the additional hospital stay. When she wanted to go home, the Oncologist refused to discharge her and always had another excuse to keep her in the hospital. SO, the hospital gets cited for deficiencies and the doctors get away with everything they did to my mother. WHAT A SYSTEM!!! The only advice I can offer people dealing with Cancer is, if under any circumstances you are in the hospital and you want to go home and the your doctor refuses to discharge you for whatever reason, CALL THE POLICE. Let the police run interference with the hospital and let them help you get out of the hospital if that is what you want!! I only wish I would have called the police for assistance. Maybe then my mother could have lived out her last few months in relative peace, home with Hospice. http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060419/NEWS11/604190347 Thank you.
